11 Beyond Book chapter 11 Beyond termites: an outlook on linear vegetation patterns in the Namib Desert Abstract: Regular patterns of vegetation bands which follow the topographic contour line occur widespread in specific geological settings and show relations to topography and vegetation. Different types can be distinguished based on distance between bands and the angle of the slope, different geology and soils and different composition of the vegetation. The observed geographical distribution patterns in the Namib Desert do not confirm global model projections.
